OBIEE Consulting

Our OBIEE Consulting Services

What It Is:
The provision of real OBIEE experts to ensure your OBIEE implementation and development runs smoothly. By providing one or more people for as little as one week upwards, we will help you remove much of the risk from your project and ensure your organisation benefits from truly accurate Business Intelligence.

Key Benefits:

  • Reduced risk by having experts bringing all necessary capabilities to your OBIEE implementation (see 'The Resource Challenge' below);
  • Reduced cost by using Consultants who design and develop OBIEE ‘first time right’ – and guide others to do the same; and
  • Reduced cost and risk by using experts backed by the combined knowledge of a consultancy.

Useful for:

  • Clients, or Systems Integrators, embarking on OBIEE development work and who need experts to supplement an in-house team;
  • Clients, or Systems Integrators, embarking on OBIEE development work and who need experts to guide and supplement near or offshore teams; and
  • Clients, or Systems Integrators, implementing OBIEE and who find they require more resources than originally envisaged, or who find implementing meaningful Business Intelligence more complex than expected.

OBIEE and the Resource Challenge

Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) is a leading enterprise software package enabling reporting, ad hoc query and analysis, dashboards, and scorecards for large organisations, providing them with better insight into business performance and trends.

The key challenge when delivering an OBIEE implementation is that OBIEE experts need to be extremely capable in multiple areas. It is easy to believe that to develop OBIEE, as with some other softwares, requires OBIEE technical expertise only - but the reality is that, to deliver effective intelligence to your business, your OBIEE resources need a wider range of skills at their disposal:

  1. Business Analysis End-consumers of Business Intelligence reports are often unaware of the capabilities of the tool, especially as implementations often replace previous BI tools that don't offer the same power. Additionally users often aren't fully aware of the type of business data they would like to see in reports. Making the business users aware of what is possible, and drawing out real requirements based on this knowledge, is a critical step.
  2. Data Warehouse Design Only once the Business Requirements are defined can the design for the Data Warehouse be done. The Data Warehouse only needs to hold the data on which reporting and analysis is to be done - storing more is likely going to impact performance. A schema approach must be decided upon, and appropriate tuning considerations acknowledged, for example the use of aggregate tables. If the Business Analysis is incorrect or incomplete, the design of the Data Warehouse will suffer, which in turn causes performance issues as well as a reduced ability to support further requirements.
  3. ETL Design/Development This step is ultimately tightly bound with the Data Warehouse Design - the two must be considered together - so expertise in ETL is fundamental.
  4. Data Quality Analysis Business Intelligence is only as good as the data it is based upon, so any OBIEE expert has to be able to see where limitations are going to occur and plan for those.
  5. OBIEE Design/Development Configuring OBIEE is a critical technical skill. At this stage, the expert must be capable of dealing with any deficiencies in the data schema, configuring business rules and dealing with security aspects, while also designing reports that users can understand.

Adding to the challenge, Gartner indicates that organisations using OBIEE tend to use it for the most-complex deployments, when compared with those for which other BI tools are used. They go on to say that, of all the BI deployments, OBIEE deployments support among the largest numbers of users, the highest data volume, broadest product functionality use, and highest complexity of analytic workload.

This level of complexity only serves to magnify the resource challenge, meaning that only true OBIEE experts with the capability to manage significant business and technical complexity will enable organisations to achieve their Business Intelligence aims.

Want True OBIEE Experts on Your OBIEE Project?

Developing OBIEE using resources without the capabilities above simply won't deliver the expected benefits from what will be a very expensive BI implementation.
